How Do Instagram Algorithms Work? – How does the Instagram algorithm work? How does it decide what content to show each user? How can we use this to our advantage?

Last week, as a part of the Creator Week event, Instagram ; provided some additional information on the feeding algorithm and how it actually determines content access.

What is “Algorithm”?

Instagram doesn’t have a single algorithm that controls what people do and don’t see on the app. This is true for many other platforms as well. Various algorithms, classifiers and processes are used, each with its own purpose.

There are too many Instagram accounts these days. According to the data, there are 1 billion user accounts on Instagram. That’s more than 10% of the world’s population. As more people join and dozens of posts are shared, it has become impossible to see everything on Instagram. By 2016, people included nearly half of the posts from their close connections; He was missing 70% of all his posts on the feed. That’s why a feed has been developed by Instagram that ranks posts according to what we care about most.

Each part of the app—Feed, Discover, Reels—uses its own algorithm tailored to how people use it. People love to see our best friends in Stories. But in Discover, we want to discover something completely new. As a result, Instagram depends on how people use them; It uses different sorting algorithms in different parts of the application.

Then Instagram gets all the information about what’s posted, who posted those posts, and our preferences. These are called “signals” and there are thousands of them. It includes everything from when a post is shared, whether you use the phone or the web, and how often you like videos.

The most important signals across Feed and Stories are, in rough order of importance:

  • Information about the article: These are signals of how popular a post is. Like how many people like it. Additionally, more mundane information about the content itself. For example, when it was posted, how long it was if it was a video, and its location, if any.
  • Information about the sender: This gives you an idea of ​​how interesting the person might be to you. to Instagram. It also includes signals such as how many times people have interacted with that person in the past few weeks.
  • Your activity: This way Instagram better understands what you might be interested in. At this point, too, there are signals such as how many posts you have liked.
  • Your history of interaction with someone: This gives Instagram an idea of ​​how generally interested you are in seeing posts from a particular person. . For example, whether you comment on each other’s posts, send messages or not.

Thus, a series of predictions is obtained. These are educated guesses about how likely you are to interact with a post in different ways. In the feed, as you are likely to comment, like, save and tap the profile photo. The more likely you are to take an action, the higher you will see the post. Signals and predictions are added and subtracted over time. The reason for this is to better reveal what you are interested in. Thus, it is also to prevent showing too many posts from the same person in a row.

How is Discover Sorted? – How Instagram Algorithms Work

Discover is a structure designed to help us discover new things. Here is the first step in ordering the posts; is to define a series of posts to be sorted. It looks for signals like posts you’ve liked, saved, and commented on in the past to find photos and videos that might interest you.

An example given by Instagram at this point:

“Let’s say you recently liked a few photos of San Francisco dumpling chef Cathay Bi (@dumplingclubsf). We then look at who else has liked Cathay’s photos, and then what other accounts these people are interested in. Maybe those who love Cathay are also at the SF dim sum spot @dragonbeaux. In this case, the next time you open Discover, we can show you a photo or video from @dragonbeaux. At this point, after finding a bunch of photos and videos, just like in Feed and Stories; sort them by how much interest you have in each. The best way to estimate how interested you are in something is to estimate your likelihood of doing something with the post. Likes, saves, and shares are among the most important predicted actions in Explore. Here are the most important signals, in rough order of importance:

  • Information about the article. Here’s how popular a post looks. These are signals like how many people like, comment, share and save a post and how fast. These signals are much more important in Discover than in Feed or Stories.
  • Your interaction history with the sender. The post was most likely shared by someone you’ve never heard of before. But if you’ve interacted with them, that gives Instagram an idea of ​​how interested you might be in what they’re posting.
  • Your activity. These are signals like posts you’ve liked, saved, or commented on, and how you’ve interacted with posts in Discover in the past.
  • Information about the person who posted. These are signals such as how many times people have interacted with that person in the past few weeks to help find interesting content from a wide variety of people.

Here too, very similar to Discover, most of what we see is that we don’t follow from accounts. Therefore, there is a similar sorting process.

However, it is possible to say that Reels focuses on entertainment. This is where surveys come into play. People are asked if they find a particular Reels fun or funny. So, considering the smaller creators; feedback is used to better learn what will keep people entertained. The most important predictions made are how likely you are to watch a Reels from start to finish, like it, say it’s funny or funny, and go to the audio page (a proxy as to whether you can be inspired to make your own Reels).   • Your activity. It looks at things like which reels you’ve liked, commented on and interacted with lately. These signals give you an idea of ​​what content might be relevant to you.
  • Your interaction history with the sender. As with Discover, the video was probably shot by someone you’ve never heard of. But if you’ve interacted with them, it gives you an idea of ​​how interested you might be in what they’re sharing.

Helping find interesting content from a wide variety of people. Additionally, popularity is included in the reviews to give everyone a chance to find their audience.

Finally, low resolution or watermarked Reels; It is also possible to say that content such as Reels, which are prepared by or on behalf of political persons, parties or government officials focusing on political issues, are not included in the recommendations.
